The hydrolysate has colloidal precipitation of alkali salt and aluminum hydroxide. It is easy to combine with potassium, sodium and ammonium to form alum, such as aluminum potassium sulfate
kAl（SO4）2·12H2O.
When hydrate is heated, it expands violently and becomes spongy. When heated to red heat, it decomposes into sulfur trioxide and alumina.

It can be used as an effective cross-linking agent of animal glue and improve its viscosity. It can also be used as curing agent of urea formaldehyde adhesive. The curing speed of 20% aqueous solution is faster.
